Pacific Islands Framework 2026-2030 — Regional consultation opens

The PIRT Secretariat has opened regional consultation on the next iteration of the Pacific Islands Framework for Nature Conservation, covering 2026–2030.

The current Framework (2021–2025) has anchored regional conservation work through six working groups, mainstreamed nature-based solutions in national policy, and aligned the Pacific position into the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The 2026–2030 refresh sharpens focus on Target 3 (30×30) area-based conservation, Target 4 species recovery, and Pacific cultural integration.

Consultation timeline

The Framework refresh runs across three rounds of consultation:

  • Round 1 (Mar–May 2026): regional working-group input + 22 PICT national consultations, including youth voice via GYBN Pacific.
  • Round 2 (Jun–Aug 2026): draft circulated to PIRT members + observer organisations.
  • Round 3 (Sep 2026): Framework adopted at the closing plenary of the 11th Pacific Islands Conference, Noumea.

National focal points + working-group co-chairs are coordinating their countries' inputs. Civil society and indigenous knowledge-holder organisations are encouraged to submit through their PIRT member organisation.
