Vemööre Declaration: Commitments to nature conservation action in the Pacific Islands region, 2021–2025

Published 1 January 2021 Type Declaration Access PDF download

The Vemööre Declaration articulates regional commitments to nature conservation, and has been promoted by Pacific leaders internationally as the Pacific Islands roadmap for biodiversity.

Adopted alongside the Pacific Islands Framework for Nature Conservation and Protected Areas 2021–2025, the Declaration translates the Framework's objectives into a high-level political commitment — endorsed by ministers and senior officials from across the region — covering biodiversity protection, sustainable use, indigenous knowledge, and ocean stewardship.

Why it matters

  • It signals Pacific leadership on biodiversity at global fora, including the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.
  • It anchors regional negotiating positions on nature finance, ocean governance, and post-2020 biodiversity targets.
  • It commits signatories to specific actions through 2025, against which PIRT monitors implementation.
